Music
represents in many ways one of the distinguishing marks of the Anglican-Episcopalian
culture and tradition, and the choir has a pre-eminent position
in all liturgies. Hymns, Psalms, Anthems and prayers: everything
in the Episcopal liturgy is sung. The Congregation, if led with
skill and passion, participate enthusiastically in the singing,
and the warmth and emotion generated during the hymns can hardly
be described to those who have never experienced them.
The primary task of the church choir is to serve and guide the
people: the music is not difficult, but needs care and attention;
can be sung in unison or harmony, and, wherever possible, arrangements
and descants keep alive even tunes that are centuries old.
The church choir is presently made up of some 12 persons, professionals
as well as volunteers. During the year and in occasion of concerts
we welcome as guests many people staying in Rome for short terms.
The choir gives, of course, wonderful opportunities of making new
friends in Rome.
A larger group, the St. Paul's concert Choir, gathers some 25 members
and has performed intensely over the past few years: Mozart's, Fauré's
and Brahms' Requiem; Bach's Magnificat and Matthaus Passion, Haendel's
Messiah and many other choral master works are the core of our repertoire.
The choir is prepared and conducted by Stefano Vasselli, the organist
and director of music of the church, but has had the privilege of
collaborating also with renowned choir and orchestra conductors
such as Nicola Samale (Italy), Ronen Borshevsky (Israel), Claus
Efland (Denmark) Kerry Krebill (U.S.A.) and Gustavo Felice (Argentina).
The choir takes part in the Church's concert season Luminaria
- Music by Candlelight with 3 - 4 performances every year and
is often invited to perform outside St. Paul's within the Walls
church.
It has recently performed for "Musicometa" and "Le
ore dell'Organo" organ series; took part in the Christmas concert
for the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi; and gave on outstanding
performance of Haendel's Messiah at the closing concert of "Grande
Musica in Chiesa".
Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at 7.00 -9.30 p.m. and on Sundays
at 9.30 a.m. For information and auditions please contact the Organist
and Director of Music Stefano Vasselli.
