'Matices,' a group of musicians from Ecuador, base their
music on a youthful and vivacious style of folk music from South
America. They use traditional instrumentssuch as the zampoñas,
bombo, quenas and rondadores. They have performed all over Equador
and as a group have won many awards.
In 1997 they produced their first CD, "Mi paz, tu nombre"
(My peace, your name) which won acclaim among their fans. Their
second CD contains the song "Hoyitos sonrientes" which
was nominated "Canciòn Bonìta 2000", an
award given by Radio Bonìta by popular vote.
Matices has participated in the "International Folklore Festival"
in Italy, and has also appeared on local and national television.
They give concerts and presentations of traditional Latin American
music and dance with the dance groups Alpa Sumac (Ecuador)
and Renacer Latinoamericano (Perù).
They now live in Rome and will shortly launch their third CD "San
juanadas," dedicated Equadorian folk music and its derivatives,
in keeping with its spirit of Latin American popular tradition.
At St. Paul's, Matices worships the Lord for His gifts and blessings,
in songs and praise to our Savior. They perform both at Sunday Holy
Eucharist and at Bible Studies. They are working to create a Spanish
language choir and have many projects for the future.
