Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2018

Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power (Exodus 15:6)

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1908 as the Octave of Christian Unity, and focused on prayer for church unity. The dates of the week were proposed by Father Paul Wattson, cofounder of the Graymoor Franciscan Friars. He conceived of the week beginning on the Feast of the Confession of Peter, on 18 January, and concluding with the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul on 25 January.

The Churches Together in Rome traditionally celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity by organizing an ecumenical service in one of the member churches. Member churches arrange other events ranging from specific prayer gatherings to lectures and worship services.

The theme for this year is ‘Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power’ (Exodus 15:6), the song of Moses and Miriam, and has been chosen to support the efforts of Caribbean Christians of many different traditions in ending political oppression, economical exploitation, and slavery. More information on this complex issue can be found on the resource pages for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity here.
